One of the Glorious Gifts from Virtual Diva Couture

Now if there's one place in Second Life where the gifts are elf, it has to be at the Virtual Diva Couture. Oh! you're wondering what "elf" means, well I just invented it; "elegant, luxurious, fashionable". The gift is a lovely lace number, Eclipse Lace.

The first photograph, is just a little teaser, but it does feature part of the 6th Anniversary & 50,000 member celebration gift from D!va, D!va Hair Iris. The hair has multiple colours, re-sizable, with an option to wear a head band and the flowers have a good choice of colours as well.

Most importantly the photograph shows off a lovely gift, Fifth Avenue Jewlry Set, Dellybean North of True North Designs and Dellybeams Gem Gallery presented me for showing her jewelry in some previous blogs. Which reminds me, apologies to anyone that clicked on the Gallery link in my last article and landed in a locked office. Honest, it wasn't my fault, the Slurl hadn't been updated on secondlife maps, well the link above is the updated one (I pray).

I took my teeth out for this shot, it just seemed to work better and yes! I'm older than I look.

Well here's the delectable dress as promised.

Freebie Fashion from the London City Freebie Megastore

Went hunting out some delightful fashion from the London City Freebie Megastore. Megastore might be a misnomer in this case, but it's got four smallish floors and don't bother with the top one ladies, it just has men's bits. Each floor is only about half full, so any stores or upcoming designers looking for floor space this might be for you.

One of outfits available from the London City Freebie Megastore
My favourite photograph from the shoot. - Animal Silks

In the slideshow the outfits and hair are all from the store, shoes in most cases are my Coco's  Gray Sandals that seem to go with just about anything. After the slideshow I've a description of the outfits and who designed them.

The majority of the garments were created by people whose accounts are now closed or inactive. One designer, whose account is closed, is Chanty Nyle. I really adore her designs I discovered and hopefully I'll be able to find more in the future. All the hair I'm wearing came from a freebie box of black hair. If you want to know about a particular outfit from the slideshow just hit the read more below and perhaps the g+1 . All the descriptions are numbered to correspond with the numbers in the slideshow captions.

See you next time. ♡ Samantha

Solution to a Second Life Nightmare - The Inventory (or Closet in my case)

BW Photo of a woman sorting her closet
If only it was this easy
Note: The viewer I'm using with my explanations in this article is Firestorm. So settle back, turn on the music provided to your right, and hopefully don't laugh to hard at my attempt at solving the closet crisis.

As I said in my last post, I was getting my first horrid experience that all in Second Life have, the inventory cleanup or in my case the closet cleanup. To be honest I didn't have a clue how to start, so friend Google sent me to many varied places and they were all saying similar things. Basically treating things as you would in real life, putting panties in one folder, blouses in another etc etc. Now that's fine in real life as you can open a drawer and see what's inside, but in SL when you open the drawer you see Skirt So&So's January Group Gift. So you still haven't got a clue what the article is besides it's a skirt.

I concluded that whole exercise would be a complete waste of time. So thinking about what I do when I get all these clothes:
  • I try them on
  • Make an outfit if I like them and
  • Trash anything I don't like.
Then it hit me, My Outfit Window, it shows me everything my avatar wears, skins, eyes, bodyshape, clothes, makeup, absolutely everything that interests me. What's more it doesn't give a hoot as to where anything is stored. I still had to think of a way to separate what I had sorted into outfits and the stuff I still had to go through or the nightmare would continue.
Image of the right-click menu from Firestorm's Inventory Window
Right-Click Menu
The solution was amazingly simple:
  • Try on the items
  • Make an outfit if I like them
  • Highlight the outfits items in the inventory
  • Right-click and select 'Move to default folder'
  • Trash the remainder of the box contents
So by doing this, all your 'sorted' items exist in the default folders and are listed on your Outfits tab of the Appearance Window, any folders outside of the default structure are the ones left to be sorted.
You might also want to keep instructional notecards or landmarks from the box, same thing right click and 'Move'. Make sure the notecard has a descriptive title before you store it though.

Shoes are a hiccup to this system because of their colour matching HUD's. I've found the HUD's are named the same as the shoes, so they are easily associated. I manually drag the HUD's into a HUD Folder I've created and right-click and store the shoes as normal. What do you do about body parts? Simply incorporate them in an existing outfit. Then store in the default folder.

I have megapacks of makeup, eyes, and skins of which I have used very little, but still did the painful task of going through them and deleted those items I disliked. The remainder I manually put into folders at the top of the clothes directory to make them easy to locate when I need makeup or whatever.

The naming of my outfits I thought was important, as this was the key of having a quick visual reference of all my stored avatar items. What came up with isn't pretty, but I've found it does the job for me. Basically each item's title starts with the clothing type e.g. Casual, Formal, Couture etc, abbreviated as the titles are restricted in length. Next I state the colour, basic items in the outfit e.g. I might say 'pants' I don't bother saying it has a 'top' as that is obvious. Well I'm not a topless dancer. Then I list the things that are out of the ordinary, like perhaps the eyes, skin, hair or jewelry if they are one's I rarely use. Well a picture is worth a thousand words they tell, so here's a picture, remember the abbreviations I've used are for my use, you're not supposed to understand them, just hopefully get the gist of what I've done.

Image of a List of Outfits using my naming nomenclature
Firestorm's Appearance Window on the Outfits Tab - List of outfits, using my nomenclature.

So what did all that mean? Well using the last entry shown as an example: It's formal brown gown with a trail, brown pearl (don't ask me where brown pearls come from) necklace, cream brown lips and smokey eyeshadow. All the rest of the items in the outfit are things I use often so aren't listed.

Something you should be aware of regarding your outfit list, your outfits on this list contain only links to the original outfit, the same as shortcuts you have on a MSWindows desktop.
Image of Outfit List with Right-Click Menu displaying "Show Original"Image of the Resulting Inventory Window after selecting 'show original' If you delete a shortcut on your windows desktop it doesn't delete the software to which the link is connected. Similarly, with your Outfit list, if you delete an outfit, the original clothes in that outfit are not deleted.

So if you want to delete the originals, what you must do prior to deleting the outfit, is to expand the outfit on your viewer, right click on the items you want to delete and select 'Show Original'. Your inventory list will then open with the item highlighted and you can delete it. Now you delete the remaining original clothes you wish and once completed, you can go ahead and delete the outfit. Please don't go deleting original body parts and alike if you use them elsewhere or want to use them in future.

Locating items in your inventory is relatively easy using the search facility in conjunction with the search filters. For example, if you need to find a different coloured eyes for a new outfit, you could just type "eyes" in the search box at the top of the inventory window. If you did that, it would find every occurrence the word "eyes" in your inventory including notecards and everything else. What you need to do is use the drop down filter box to limit you search. In this case you would select the clothing/bodyparts filter. The search won't just find your 'original' eyes, it will also find all the 'links' to eyes in your outfits folder. So, unless you are looking for a particular set of eyes you know are already part of an outfit, collapse the outfit folder when you come to it.

A caveat before I end, my avatar has a classic body, so I don't know if my solution is applicable to mesh bodies with all their huds, applicators and things I probably don't know about. This article got a little more in depth than I originally planned, but on writing thought further explanation was needed, if only for my peace of mind. Also apologies to old timers who have probably already come to the same conclusions as me, but hopefully the article will help some fellow newbies out there.

If anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to ask them in the comments section or IM me in Second Life.

Until next time. xxx Samantha

Inventory Cleanup and A Gizza Gift I Missed

I've just discovered Second Life does have some drudgery, the dreaded inventory cleanup. It's the first time I've tackled this problem and thank the god's my inventory only has avatar related items. I think I've thought of a great system, but more on that next time.

For now, here's the missing June Gizza Gift I located during my inventory cleanup and apologies to Gizza for my oversight. I have also included this photograph with the slideshow in the original article.

That's all for now, until next time xxx Samantha

Gizza Gifts Galore

A gentleman was kind enough to tell me about Gizza. Oh my! what a stunning collection of group gifts, the group is free to join. For once I'm just going to let the photographs do the talking.

Some of the jewelry and shoes I am wearing weren't included with the outfits, but they all have appeared in my previous blog posts and are freebies. I'm not to well today, so kept it short and sweet, but I hope it was of some value to you.
Until next time. xxx Samantha.

Delightful Designers found at FABFREE

Another day of discovering the wonderful freebies available in Second Life. A gentleman was kind enough to give me a tip about Fabfree, saying they had some really good designers providing freebies for them, so naturally I had to take a look-see.

The one important lesson I learned about SL clothing today, is that you should ADD Alpha's not wear them, that appears to be the case for some attachments too.

If anyone can answer a question I have about Shoe HUD's I will really appreciate it. I only seem to be able to adjust my shoes by returning to the point of sale to use the HUD, is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Now back on the subject, below is a slideshow of some of the wonderful outfits available at Fabfree Headquarters. Below the slideshow is a description of each of the outfits. A huge hug for Anne Maertens of Dulce Secrets for directing me to her public studio.

Designer Three Graces Designs has made available their very elegant Unforgettable Lavender Gown, complete with jewelry. The jewelry set contained a delightful hair pin, necklace, earrings, bracelet and ring.

Bad Revenge offers their stunning Summer Madras outfit. With that I'm wearing an Antique Gold Blush Opal necklace and earrings from Dellybeams Gem Gallery, another freebie at Fabfree.

Basta's Poseidon's Daughter split gown is extremely alluring and must be one my best finds for the day.

For those of you venturing into world of medieval, I found a delightful medieval dress named Eluthiel by C&N Medieval Design.

Glitter donated to Fabfree her beautiful Ishani mesh gown, a lovely addition for any wardrobe.

The Sara mesh mini dress is a Kamiri creation. This striking strapless dress is suitable for many different occasions.

Ever Wonder's More Than Ever store gifted Fabfree a frolicking fun summer outfit called Blue Composure and Ruckus Dress.

Ever wanted an elegant jumpsuit that comes with a colour change HUD? Well that's what Precious Designs has provided with their It's That Time Again Jumpsuit.

Never sure what to wear for that casual walk on the boardwalk near the beach, well Prism has provided the answer with their delightful Hillary outfit by Journey. I'm not a great one for shorts, but the combination Journey has made with scarf and tube top is quite lovely.

For ladies who like to wear black, but feel it's out of place on the beach, I think Sin Original's Penny 04 outfit provides a lovely compromise.

Feeling a little daring, well the The Vampire Realm's licentious Alicia dress might just fit the bill. I will be bold and suggest wearing panties with this number.

Want to turn some heads with pure sophistication, well I think my favourite design for the day will do just that. Tiffany Design's Nayra mesh dress is simplicity with elegance, the texture is simply perfect for the dress and the accompanying hat is delicious. Definitely my cup of tea.

Until next time. xxx Samantha

*SLurl's are provided as a convenience, I cannot guarantee their accuracy. Some are taken from lm's provided in boxes, others I've sourced using google maps.

Gimme head with hair, Long beautiful hair

I went to the Hair Fair today, and bought home a show bag full of goodies. The show has only one more day to run, so you need to hurry ladies if you want the lovely hair freebies from A&A.

A&A Chris Hair Demo

The Fair did showcase the skill of Second Life's hair stylists. I was very impressed with some of the short unisex hair styles. One especially caught my eye, A&A Chris Hair. I thought it suited my face really well.
When I have saved up a few Linden, I think this will definitely be on my shopping list.

Happy shopping, until next time. xxx Samantha

First Day & Fabulous Freebies

Welcome to Samantha's Style. I am a first time blogger and now with time on my hands, decided to venture into the virtual world of Second Life to fulfill a fantasy of mine, to become involved in the fashion industry.

The photo, taken in a Linden house of a friend I met today, is of me after 12 hours of freebie shopping. It took me over thirty attempts to get a photo that was any good. My friend helped me with the windlight settings, hopefully my photographic skills will improve as I gain knowledge and experience.

Everything of Samantha and what she is wearing cost $0, that's right, everything is a freebie.

The suit is Indyra Originals for The Free Dove: Falon found at White Dove. The suit is absolutely gorgeous, if "Indyra" thinks this is freebie quality, I'm most certainly going to look at their main store.

The hair is Hannah V1 D04 from sWEETHAIRs. They give a gift of any one of their hairstyles to avatars under thirty days old. You would be looking at around $L350 if you bought this retail.

The eyes are Ice Image Eyes, a group gift from Amacci.

My skin is Ashley Group Gift from Esode. I'm wearing the no cleavage version, with brows and teeth tattoo. In lieu of the teeth tattoo, you have the choice of a freckles tattoo or two lip colours.

The shoes are Coco Ankle Strap Sandals Gray a freebie from Coco Designs. These Coco shoes were the only freebie heels I found that fitted correctly. The others I tried had remnants of a foot shaper showing.

The body shape is Dulce Secrets Kiarai Shape. I am fairly sure I found that at either White Dove or Sexy Freebies Paradise. It is the shape for which I was looking, what else can I say.

Hopefully this is a help to at least one poor soul, until next time.   xxx Samantha
